The Shire of Dundas is proud to support a very worthwhile cause, with council approving a $10,000 grant to assist with important restoration works at the Eyre Bird Observatory.
Located on Mirning Country, at the edge of the Nuytsland Nature Reserve and overlooking the Great Southern Ocean, the Observatory is housed in the historic former Telegraph Station and has been operated by BirdLife Australia since 1977.
The funding will help protect the site’s significant heritage values, including its architecture, museum collection, Aboriginal heritage, and unique coastal landscapes. The Eyre Bird Observatory Committee has been proactive, commissioning a heritage assessment, planning future works, and committing to replace the building’s roof in early 2025 as the first stage of conservation.
With support from BirdLife Australia, government agencies, and the community, these efforts aim to secure the Observatory’s long-term future while continuing its role in bird observation, environmental research, and heritage preservation.
