COMMUNITY NOTICE

SHIRE TO ASSUME MANAGEMENT OF THE NORSEMAN GOLF COURSE

The Shire of Dundas would like to announce that the care, control, and management of the Norseman Golf Course area (Reserve 13004) will be transferred to the Shire once the legislative requirement of the new vesting order has been completed. It is anticipated that the order should be finalised within the next couple of weeks. The Shire would also like to note that prior to this order being finalised, the Shire had no control or authority over the management of the Golf Course.

The Shire of Dundas is largely beholden to the fluctuating fortunes of the mining industry, and with the last downturn in that industry, our population, particularly here in Norseman, has been markedly diminished. Those of us who have been residents for some time will well remember the thriving sporting clubs and many community events that were the norm ‘back in the day’, no less than those held at the Golf Club. With our loss of population, our sporting clubs have folded, one by one, with the Golf Club the last of the era.

Unfortunately, the lack of members and volunteers has led to the golf course and surrounding areas becoming unfit for their intended purpose due to the presence of contaminated material, rubbish, dead trees, and some structural damage to the clubhouse. A report was tabled at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 18 August 2026, the link to the meeting can be found on the Shire of Dundas website:

Once the new Management Order is finalised, the Shire will begin a comprehensive assessment of the remedial works that will need to be undertaken to restore the Golf Course as a safe, inclusive, and sustainable community and tourism asset. These works will require some time to complete as the Shire has, to this point, not had any meaningful access to the course to carry out a full assessment. The time to complete the assessment and remedial works will inevitably be longer than many people will have patience for. The safety of our community, visitors, employees, and contractors must remain our first priority. However, we will be working to restore full access to the course as soon as possible.

In the interim, the Shire will continue to maintain the two Nullarbor Links holes, and they will be made available for everyone to use via their designated access routes. The rest of the course will have restricted access while we inspect, remove or isolate any obvious safety risks and confirm all necessary insurance arrangements are in place.

Council looks forward to working with the community, Nullarbor Links and Golf WA to improve the course and restore it as an important community and tourism facility.

The Shire will keep the community updated as this work progresses.
