COMMUNITY NOTICE
ACCESS TO THE NORSEMAN GOLF COURSE CLUBHOUSE
The Shire of Dundas wishes to clarify recent comments questioning the Shire’s authority to access the Norseman Golf Course Clubhouse.
As communicated in the Shire’s Community Notice dated 21 August 2026, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage undertook an extensive review of the management of the Norseman Golf Course (Reserve 13004), which included inspections and consideration of longstanding concerns regarding the condition, maintenance, safety and accessibility of the golf course. Following this process, the State Government revoked the management order previously held by the Norseman Golf Club and issued a new management order to the Shire of Dundas.
The Shire now holds responsibility for the care, control, and management of the reserve, including the clubhouse and associated facilities.
Council made its intentions clear in August. The Shire would commence assessments of the golf course, address identified risks, and work towards restoring the golf course to a sustainable community and tourism recreation facility. As part of this work, Shire employees have accessed the clubhouse to identify and catalogue historical items within the building. The clubhouse is in significant disrepair, as such Council wants to ensure that items reflecting the history of golf in Norseman are documented and protected from damage or deterioration. Our intention is to preserve these items, respect any established ownership interests and provide an opportunity for suitable memorabilia to be displayed in a future replacement facility.
Norseman has a proud sporting history, and we want to see that history protected, not lost. However, Council must deal with the condition of the facilities as they stand today. The Department's inspections identified significant concerns, including the condition of the clubhouse, contaminated materials, dumped waste and other public safety hazards.
The Shire has inherited an important community asset that requires considerable attention; addressing these issues will take time, resources, and careful planning. Council’s focus is not on disputes about the past. It is on protecting the history of the golf course, making the site safe, and restoring the facility to its full potential so that it can once again be enjoyed by residents and visitors.
